Uni-Y (Uni-YMCA) Freshman orientation camp 2011 will be held some where around late June or early July. We will give an update to when the actual camp dates is.

About Uni-YMCA

Uni-YMCA is a dynamic club that aims to cultivate servant leadership in our members, through reaching out to the community. We are affiliated to YMCA Singapore, and therefore share the YMCA Vision in helping the under-privileged and less fortunate amongst us. In order to fulfill our mission, we have branched out into various sub-committees such as Local & International Community Service as well as Social Enterprise. We are constantly brainstorming for events to further our cause, hence the birth of our new Freshman Camp! We believe this is a perfect opportunity for all of us to laugh, cheer and have fun, while contributing to a good cause!

More about the CAMP!
Because we’re a service-oriented club, our camp will also have service-oriented activities! Besides fun and games, there are also programmes lined up for participants to engage in local community service projects. Rest assured that this camp will be exciting and enjoyable at the same time. Take this chance to get away from stress, relax and meet new friends!

1. Recruitment Drive: Go Green for the Community

More About Go Green
Go Green for the Community aims to develop the notion of the community giving back to the community through recycling efforts.
For this project, volunteers will collect old newspaper and old clothes from the residents and will exchange them for groceries like instant noodles and rice. These groceries will then be donated to the needy families in the constituency.
Before the distribution, volunteers will have to conduct house visits to the needy families. These visits seek to expose the volunteers to the problems facing the families, so that they can better understand their situation. Also, it helps to give assurance to the needy families that they are being taken care of. During the visit, the volunteers can brief the volunteers on what are the schemes available to them. After the visits, the families will be then be “classified” according of their level of need. The “more needy” families will receive a larger share of the groceries. The groceries will all be distributed to all the families just before Chinese New Year. We will seek to give them any additional services possible as well.

We are currently looking for passionate and responsible individuals to come forward and join us in organising committee comprising both NUS students and YEC.

Fast Facts of Cambodia

1) The crown-jewel of the Khmer Empire was the city of Angkor, centered around the temple of Angkor Wat. Construction began in the 890s, and Angkor served as the seat of power for more than 500 years. At its height Angkor covered more area than modern-day New York City.

2) In 1975 the Khmer Rouge won the civil war, and set to work creating an agrarian communist utopia by exterminating political opponents, monks and priests, and educated people in general. Just four years of Khmer Rouge rule left 1 to 2 million Cambodians dead- about 1/5 of the population.

3) Cambodia has arguably the most interesting history in South East Asia, but it still remains in the third world.
