UNI-Y CAMBODIA YEP MAY 2010

UNI-Y CAMBODIA YEP MAY 2010

1)      Uni-Y YEP Cambodia May 2010 offers you the opportunity to spend time ( yes, I mean a lot of time!) with children and youths (5 to 21 years of age) from an orphanage!

2)      This service learning trip entails the erection of a fence around the orphanage, conducting English lessons for them, and other ad-hoc projects!

3)      Trips to the Angkor Wat, Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng (the genocide) museum will be facilitated to understand the circumstances and culture of the local people. (trust me this is NOT the highlight of the trip)

4)      This project is the continuation of previous projects and there will be other teams to follow. So you can bet that what you do there is really substantial in helping the orphanage!

Duration: 2 weeks (tentatively 8th to 22th of May, +3 days)

Cost: <$650 after YEP subsidy

For more information, please contact Joseph at +90663731 and email to uniycambodia@gmail.com or joseph.yap.zy@gmail.com to indicate your interest! Please include your name, faculty and contact number.

For eg, “Hi!! I am xxxxxxx from faculty of xxxxxx and i’m interested to go to Cambodia!”

Hope to hear from you soon!

Fast Facts of Cambodia

1) The crown-jewel of the Khmer Empire was the city of Angkor, centered around the temple of Angkor Wat. Construction began in the 890s, and Angkor served as the seat of power for more than 500 years. At its height Angkor covered more area than modern-day New York City.

2) In 1975 the Khmer Rouge won the civil war, and set to work creating an agrarian communist utopia by exterminating political opponents, monks and priests, and educated people in general. Just four years of Khmer Rouge rule left 1 to 2 million Cambodians dead- about 1/5 of the population.

3) Cambodia has arguably the most interesting history in South East Asia, but it still remains in the third world.

It is a uniquely designed camp organised and driven by volunteers from NUS, NTU and SMU (First time collaboration!) and supported by volunteers and supported by staff to provide fun and social integration opportunities whilst challenging the preconceived limits of beneficiaries and volunteers alike.

This fun filled, 1 beneficiary 1 volunteer camp aims to raise the self esteem and confidence of our 70 participating beneficiaries while providing varied platforms for the personal and social development of an equal number of volunteers.

PURPOSE OF YCAMP

- To develop the body (referring to physical health & fitness), mind (referring to knowledge) & spirit (referring to attitudes & character) & of every camper.

- To promote social integration between people with disabilities and the community at large

- To generate awareness and provide public education on the characteristics and needs of people with disabilities
